Mustang Tiji Festival

Tiji Festival 2021

9 °C

Join our exclusive 2021 Upper Mustang Tiji Festival Trek to experience the famous Tiji Festival celebrated in Lo-Manthang from 08th May to 10th May 2021. Booking is now open!

A time of celebration and religious pilgrimage for the people of Lo, the annual Tiji Festival is an extraordinary spectacle of good triumphing over evil that will give you unique insights into the rich cultural legacy of the long forbidden Kingdom of Mustang, tucked away in remote, rugged mountains on the border of Nepal and Tibet.

For three days, monks wearing masks and colourful costumes swirl to the rhythm of traditional drums, horns and Buddhist chanting, re-enacting the battle of Dorje Shunu against his demon father to save the people of Mustang from drought, their animals from infertility and the land from other disasters.

Initially a religious ceremony, Tiji has evolved over time to become a symbol of hope, strength and peace. It is believed that simply attending it will bring merit to its observers. Days before is begins, the people of Lo start to make their way to Lo-Manthang, filling the trails with pilgrims and mule caravans.

Like the members of the royal family, who personally attend dressed in their best finery, they come to watch Dorje Shunu slay a straw effigy of the demon and free Mustang of evil spirits. An explosion of muskets concludes the celebrations, marking the end of the harsh dry winter and the beginning of the growing season.

This is an outstanding journey into one of the last Tibetan cultures existing today. A true gem of the Himalayas, virtually unchanged for centuries, set in breathtaking wilderness.
